Card machine fees explained for NI businesses

Transaction charges, monthly rental and the extras that don't always make the headline. Here's what to check on your statement.

Why the headline rate isn't the full story

Card machine deals are often sold on one headline rate. What you actually pay depends on how your customers pay, how much you take and which extra charges apply. Two businesses on the same deal can end up paying very different amounts.

Transaction charges

Most providers charge a percentage, a fixed amount per transaction, or a mix. Debit and credit cards, business cards and cards from outside the UK can all be charged differently. Check how each type is priced on your statement.

Monthly fees and terminal rental

Some deals include a monthly rental for the terminal, a monthly service fee or a minimum monthly charge. A deal with no monthly fee can still cost more if the transaction charges are higher.

Extra charges to look out for

Look for things like PCI compliance charges, authorisation fees, refund or chargeback fees, and charges for early exit. Not every provider has them, but they're worth knowing about.

Settlement times

How quickly your takings land in your bank matters for cash flow. Some setups offer next-day settlement. Check what you're getting now.

What's the cheapest card machine for a small business?

The cheapest one is the one that costs least for your turnover and the way your customers pay. Send us a recent statement and we'll check it for free, and ask about our free card terminal offer this winter.
